Marek Grechuta was a singer, composer, pianist, poet, also painter and architect. He studied piano until his maturity exam. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Crakow Academy of Fine Arts. In 1967, together with Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz, he founded the student cabaret Anawa, which later gave rise to a vocal and instrumental ensemble. He made his debut with Anawa at the 6th Polish Performing Arts Festival in Crakow (Kraków). He worked with Anawa until 1972, winning many awards and distinctions at the KFPP in Opole and FAMA in Świnoujście.

From 1972 to 1976 he led the group Wiem, including among others: Jan Cichy (bass guitar), Józef Gawrych (vibraphone, Paweł Jarzębski (cb), Kazimierz Jonkisz, Bogdan Kulik (drums), Antoni Krupa, Paweł Ścierański (guitar), Piotr Michera (violine), Eugeniusz Obarski (p). Since 1976, with short breaks, Marek Grechuta performed again with Anawa. He also sang solo or with occasionally formed bands. He had collaborated with Piwnica pod Baranami. From 1979 to 1989 he ran his own “Piwnica pod Różą” (The Rose Cellar) in Kraków.

He was the composer of the musical “Szalona lokomotywa” (Crazy Locomotive) (co-authored with J. K. Pawluśkiewicz), the oratorio “Zapach łamanego w rękach chleba” (The Smell of Broken Bread in the Hands) to poems by T. Nowak, music on his own LPs “Śpiewające obrazy” (Singing Pictures), “W malinowym chruśniaku” (In Raspberry Berry), “Wiosna, ach to ty” (Spring, ah that’s You), “Krajobraz pełen nadziei” (Landscape full of hope) music for the theatre plays “Niebezpieczne związki” (Dangerous Relationships), “Colas Breugnon”, “Othello”; author of approximately two hundred and fifty songs.

He was awarded the main prize (with the band Anawa) at the Polish Music Festival in 1967 for “Tango Anawa”, the first prize at the FAMA Festival in Świnoujście in 1968, the journalists’ prize at the Opole Festival in 1968 for “Serce” (Heart), the TVP award at the Opole Festival in 1969 for “Wesele” (Wedding), the MKiS award at the Opole Festival in1971 for “Korowód II” (Procession II), first prize at the Opole Festival in 1977 for “Hop, szklanka piwa” (Hop, Glass of Beer). He repeatedly won press and radio plebiscites as a performer and composer.

He gave around three thousand recitals at home and abroad, including in East Germany, West Germany, the USSR, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Cuba, France, England and Italy, as well as in Polish communities in the US America, Canada and Australia. He presented his paintings at individual exhibitions in Poland and abroad. He published the poetry collections “Na serca dnie” (At the Bottom of the Heart) and “Krajobraz pełen nadziei” (A Landscape full of Hope. His songs were also sung by Teresa Haremza, Krystyna Janda, Dorota Pomykała, Maryla Rodowicz, Magda Umer and foreign performers. He is the protagonist of the documentary film “Z pamiętnika mej duszy” (From the Diary of My Soul), directed by P. Aleksowski.
