Warner Music Poland Release Information

“Cień wielkiej góry” (Shadow of the Great Mountain) was Budka Suflera’s (Prompter Box) extremely successful studio debut, recorded in 1975. The album completely redefined Polish youth music, ripping off the airy cloak of stage pacing and unpretentious melodicism.

The album contains one of the band’s greatest hits, the title track “Cień wielkiej góry”, inspired by the tragic death of two Polish Himalayan climbers, Zbigniew Stepek and Andrzej Grzązek, who died under an avalanche of ice blocks in August 1973.

The biggest star of the Polish music scene at the time was invited as a guest to record the album: Czesław Niemen, who performed two instrumental parts to the suite “Szalony koń” (Crazy Horse) bringing to the sound of the album the characteristic sound of his Moog instrument, rare in Poland at this time.

The premiere of the album was recalled by singer and author Krzysztof Cugowski in an interview with Łukasz Kaczyński: “The premiere took place during the festival in Sopot, where we were playing. On the day the album was supposed to hit the shops, queues lined up for it from the morning. An edition of 60.000 copies was sold out within a day. No one reissued the record, because market rules didn’t work then. The demand was gigantic. We would have sold up to half a million records then.”
