A singer and an album of extraordinary qualities and dramatic destinies

With Marta Kubišová’s announced departure from the scene, here is a reissue of her debut album from 1969. A great singer and a courageous woman, this set of eleven superb recordings was also heavily influenced by the circumstances of the time. The onset of communist “normalisation” brought many obstacles to the creation, causing a partial change in content and cover artwork when the sold-out LP was released, followed by a complete ban on touring, recording and releasing.

It took twenty years until this album was allowed to reappear. This year’s reissue is based on the original form, enhanced by expanded pressing content and remastering. The new LP is pressed in a “heavy vinyl” version, giving the assumption of maximum sound quality. The LP sleeve and CD booklet include an interesting summary of period material and reviews, the 1996 editor’s note and, for the first time ever, a complete set of all song lyrics.

To the music of Ota Petřina, Jindřich Brabec, Bohuslav Ondráček and Angelo Michajlov, as well as to the foreign songs, you can read the often already humanised words of Zdeněk Rytíř, Milona Čepelka, Petr Rada, Jan Schneider and Eduard Krečmar, in some cases almost the last before their emigration. If excellent songs can be said to be cult, then these songs and ballads are certainly among them. The graphically new, but original variant honoring packaging of both versions brings back important memories.
