16 Czechoslovak bands on the road from beat to rock and beyond

The fourth installment of the 2CD selection of the most interesting recordings of our rock history. The chronological shift this time goes back to the first half of the 70s, especially to the last beat festival in 1971. By then, cultural “normalization” was also setting in, but some previously freely planned gramoprojects still managed to be recorded. A total of 36 tracks by sixteen Czechoslovak bands thus show the journey from melodic big beat to punchy electric rock or rhythm and blues and beyond. The occasional fusion with elements of classical, jazz or folk music made rock newly progressive and presented fans with an appealingly challenging listening experience.

Alongside the traditional major centres of the rock scene in Prague and Bratislava, you will rightly find variously numerous representatives from Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc and Nové Zámky. Everywhere, still very young singers and instrumentalists were proving what a huge and often internationally comparable progress they had made. In some cases, singles or albums released during this period even became some of the absolute highlights of the domestic rock scene. However, its outlook in the rest of the seventh decade was certainly not rosy. Often these were band swan songs, today with a touch of cultishness, see “Kuře v hodinkách” (Chicken in the Clock), “Město ER” (City ER), “Barnodaj”, “Provisorium”, etc.

In total 150 minutes of music.
