His “Best of” after 30 years again on vinyl

In 1990, an EP was released, presenting a cross-section of the songwriting legacy of the then sadly almost decade-dead singer with a talent for pure pop and hard rock. Schelinger’s brother Milan expertly selected fourteen tracks, ranging from the entry-level hit “Holubí dům” (Pigeon House) to hints of where the road might be heading, the Zemětřesení (Earthquake) project.

This reissue has preserved the original content, mixed non-chronologically but listener-appreciative. Overwhelmingly backed by F. R. Cech’s band, Schelinger did an unmistakable job in the lightly comedic pieces, in the quite noisy rock for the time, and in the ballads, in which he is one of our absolute historical leaders.

The cover has been partially reconstructed, as the original artwork has not been preserved. The old design is based exclusively on photographs by Otto Dlabola, who had a long professional friendship with Jiří Schelinger. Apart from the iconic title portrait, on the back of the cover you will also find evidence of the singer’s physical, and indeed repertoire, changes on the inner one. These evolved from the handsome exponent of the bubble-gum dance to the moustache-adorned brooding creator just before his tragic death. The album is thus a musical and visual look back at the sadly short but fulfilled life of an extraordinary singer and gifted composer, one of those who managed to shed light on the “normalising” darkness of the 1970s.
