More than just a memory: an interesting innovation of an excellent album

Nerez’s second LP in 1988 was highly regarded for both its musical content and its cover art by graphic artist Michal Cihlář. Zuzana Navarová, Vít Sázavský, Zdeněk Vřešťál, and Vladimír Vytiska surprised with a set of songs in a more arranged, modern over-folk form compared to the concert performance and the album debut.

Introduced and ended with the “Střemhlav motif”, the album is filled with songs with unmistakably Rezovian singing and poetics of lyrics, but with the help of numerous guests also pleasantly surpassing (not only) the expectations of the time. The inspiration of folk songs, but also the vigorously electrified procedures are a sign of the independence that the band has rightfully earned. This also applies to the unconventional packaging, elevating the graphics above the commercial message.

This time, not finding the production backing turned into a beautiful adventure. Michal Cihlář, with the friendly consent of Mr. Vřešťál and Mr. Sázavský, started to innovate the original work. The title page, but actually the whole cover art, is a variation on the theme, offering admirers this year’s model. You will also find the once unrealized title and other specialties.

Together with the careful treatment of the vinyl and CD sound, it’s an opportunity for owners of the original LP to compare the situation then and now. Underpinning it all is the ageless music itself: “Naboso”, “Černá voda” (Black Water), “Dušičky” (Soulful), “Yburan Omazyp” and seven other little gems.
