To the roughly two thousand titles that the Gustav Brom Radio Orchestra recorded in Brno from 1957 onwards, a rare collection includes a total of 18 compositions by Karel Velebný, which he arranged especially for Brom’s “medium” big band (4 saxes, 3 trombones, 3 trumpets and rhythm section) and in 14 of which he guested with his vibraphone. Between 1969 and 1981, he arrived with his instrument a total of seven times to authorize new versions of his compositions, twice: carefully in the quiet of the studio and live in the presence of the audience, on popular public radio recordings.

By 1988, the Brom Orchestra had captured four more of Velebný’s compositions without the composer’s personal participation. While there is a large amount of Velebný’s SHQ repertoire on several less official recordings, the Brno orchestral recordings leave the darkness and silence of the radio sound archive for the first time to add a hitherto unknown face to the musician’s portrait.
