We begin Neckář’s anniversary year with a look back at his first album. As was customary at the time, it was a selection of mainly singles, in this case exclusively from 1965 and 1966. This was the era of his rapid rise, supported by the artists around the Rokoko Theatre, the Czechoslovak Radio Dance Orchestra and the band Mefisto. At that time it was common for singers to be accompanied by big bands and small electrified ensembles, as the repertoire was suitably varied.

Almost swing, almost western, almost big beat and almost comedy songs fit side by side, but admirably held together by Václav’s boyishly optimistic voice, unique in our country at that time. If you add proven composers of the calibre of Jiří Bažant, Jaromír Vomáček or Bohuslav Ondráček and lyrics by the equally experienced Jan Schneider or Ivo Fischer, the quality is clear.

The debut album is retro in the best sense of the word, including the title photo. The youth of the title may no longer apply to the listener and Václav will be eighty this year, but time is losing this battle. The easy to remember, lyrically clever and period colourful songs have had, have and will continue to have their appreciative fans of all ages.
