The first and best album by the inimitable Dino Dvornik in a luxurious vinyl reissue
The Croatian king of funk, as many called him during his career, Dino Dvornik, shone on the music scene in 1989 with his debut album “Dino Dvornik”.
The songs “Zašto praviš slona od mene” (Why Are You Making an Elephant out of Me), “Ti si mi u mislima” (You Are on My Mind), “Tebi pripadam” (I Belong to You), “Lady” and “Ljubav se zove imenom tvojim” (Love Is Called by Your Name) from that album became big hits, and to this day they have acquired the status of evergreens with their brilliance, unique rhythm, inimitable performance and musical freshness.
“Dino will always be present through his music and I think that was his life’s mission, “to leave a mark and be different from others” and to be talked about and listened to. Dino was simply a special person, both musically and personally. We look forward to the re-release of his first album on vinyl. If it were up to Dino, it would have happened much sooner,” wrote Danijela Dvornik in the booklet accompanying the release. In addition to her, Dino’s closest friends and fellow musicians, Alka Vuica, Gibonni, Josipa Lisac and Neno Belan, also wrote about him.
“Dino had an absolute ear and was incredibly talented. We all learned from him and we can still learn from him today. His songs are timeless and will never go out of style. As a person, he was brutally honest and had no interest in being falsely polite. He was there in every moment. I have never met a freer person than him in my life,” wrote Alka Vuica, and Josipa Lisac added that even today, we can hear Dino through what younger musicians create, because “through his creativity and personality, he became food for many.” “Authenticity, uniqueness and originality survive. They live forever. Along with wonderful songs, I personally think that this is his greatest value. Most of them would like to be Dino Dvornik,” she pointed out.
Neno Belan recalled an anecdote from the time of Kineski Zid (The Great Wall of China), Hidrant (the Hydrant) and Narodni blag (The National Treasure) and concluded: “Dino was a great friend, he never messed up, he was my guest a hundred times, and I was his. He always showed up regardless of all the problems that accompanied him in life. He was very intelligent, funny, charming. It was a real pleasure to be with him and there was always laughter and joy.”
“He started a musical revolution as a producer, as an author, as a singer, and as a frontman. Dino is one of those rare people who, as soon as he enters the room, it is clear who the leader of the team is and the energy substation to which everyone is connected. He was able to bring out the best in his collaborators, often what we didn’t even know we had in ourselves. Dino Dvornik, the one and only!” said Gibonni.
If Dino was the alpha of this album, then Dragan “Luky” Lukić was the omega, the sound engineer and all that, and above all his great friend and the man who produced some of the most important albums of the Croatian music scene from the late 80s and 90s. Luky told the story of how the song “Ti si mi u mislima” (You Are on My Mind) came about, while music critic Zlatko Gall declared this album a letter of intent for what was to come, which was an entry into the world of the king of funk. The album was recorded and mixed in Nenad Vilović’s recording studio, who for this occasion called Dino a prisoner of funk.
“I often used to criticize him for the style of music that he had been using in his songs for a long time. I would say to him: “Do you see what is happening around you, new styles of music are coming, techno, rap, house, and you are constantly pushing funk? ” The criticism would work because the next time he was in the studio, he would triumphantly start programming the drum, relying on new musical trends. That was all well and good while he was working on the drums, but when it was his turn to play bass, stylistic figures characteristic of funk would start to appear. When he started playing guitars, it would already be very close to funk. And the keyboards would bring him back completely to the funky style. He simply could not resist his funky urge. That is why I say that Dino was not a fan of funk, he was a prisoner of funk,” said Vilović.
The album “Dino Dvornik” has been remastered from the original tapes just for this occasion, and has been released in high resolution exclusively on the Apple Music streaming service. Behind it all is Goran Martinac from the Croatia Records Studio. The reissue was designed by Darko Kujundžić, while the booklet also includes a photograph of Dino Dvornik, by the Split photographer Matko Biljko.
