Croatia Records Release Information
Tomislav Ivčić was a giant of Yugoslavian pop music, and his songs have left an indelible mark on the domestic music scene. His musical journey has been marked by more than 200 written songs and lyrics, and 23 albums with which he achieved a million-euro circulation.
Starting today, the double vinyl edition “25 Greatest Hits” completes his rich music collection, which is adorned with timeless hits such as “Večeras je naša fešta” (Tonight Is Our Party), “Tamo gdje sam rodjen” (There, where I Was Born), “Zapivajmo nočas u kolibi” (Let’s Sing in the Tavern Tonight) and “Najljepša si” (You Are the most Beautiful). The packaging of this compilation also includes an interview with Izabela Vrtar, daughter of Tomislav Ivčić, as well as short stories about the greatness and opus of Ivčić by his colleagues from the scene Davor Pekota, Ivana Husar Mlinac, Nena Belan, Mija Dimšić, Marina Tomašević, Tomislav Bralić and Mladen Grdović.
“Of course, in that vast opus of my father, a few songs stood out, as did most of the authors and singer-songwriters, who have been a rare breed in Croatia. All these years, even if they wanted to, musicians couldn’t help but sing “Večeras je naša fešta” (Tonight Is Our Party) at parties from Istria to Dubrovnik. “Zapivajmo nočas u kolibi” (Let’s Sing in the Tavern Tonight), “Tuđi čovik nikad neće znati što to veže” (Another Man Will never Know what It Is about)… There are some verses that were not only sung, but are part of the city’s murals,” said Izabela Vrtar.
One of his greatest successes is certainly his song “Večeras je naša fešta” (Tonight Is Our Party), which has become a kind of anthem of Dalmatia and is often performed and sung at festivals, but also when celebrating victories and awards of Dalmatian athletes and sports clubs.
Mladen Grdović recalled the beginnings and Tomislav’s great influence: “We created together, we simply responded to each other. Tomislav was the first to see everything in me, he saw that I was a singer-songwriter and a composer. (…) We worked together for 20 years and when someone asks me about him, I am always overcome with nostalgia and sadness.”
During the Yugoslavian civil war, he composed and sang the song in English “Stop the War in Croatia”, one of the most famous anti-war songs written in the early 1990s. Ivčić performed at numerous festivals during his lifetime. In addition to concerts in Croatia and other parts of Yugoslavia, he performed on solo tours in the US America, Australia, New Zealand, South America and throughout Europe.
“Regardless of all the years that have passed, Tomislav Ivčić’s songs are still relevant and have become evergreens. Perhaps my favorite song by Tomislav Ivčić is “Gdje si sad moj anđele” (Where Are You now, My Angel?) because it was played a lot on the radio when I was a girl and somehow fascinated me and I would always stop when I heard the intro to that song,” recalled Mia Dimšić.
The music edition “25 Greatest Hits” exclusively on vinyl was launched by Croatia Records last year. It is a music project that aims to remind us of the most significant, most popular and best-selling authors, performers and songs. The authors are music lovers and connoisseurs: Želimir Babogredac, director of the record company Croatia Records, and Zlatko Turkalj, music critic, journalist and radio editor. Iva Vianello from Črčke design is responsible for the graphic design.
