Croatia Records Release Information
The debut album of our musical diva Gabi Novak, simply titled “Gabi”, was originally released in early 1970, ten years after the first EP single “Ljubav ili šala” (Love or Joke). It was recorded in November 1969 at Jugoton’s studio in Jadran Film under the producer and conductor baton of jazz pianist Kreša Oblak, who was assisted by Nikica Kalogjera and Miljenko Prohaska conducting the entertainment orchestra and the Admira Quartet. Many of the songs from this album have become classics of Yugoslavian popular music, including “Malo riječi treba kad se voli” (Few Words Are Needed when You Love), “Vino i gitare” (Wine and Guitars), “Bit ćeš uvijek moj” (You Will always Be Mine), “Pusti me da spavam” (Let Me Sleep), and “Sve što znaš o meni” (Everything You Know about Me). These were very significant songs for Gabi Novak, who had the idea of her first major album in her heart for a long time.
Zvonimir Golob wrote on the original release, among other things: “Gabi Novak, without a doubt, belongs to the interpreters who are to a large extent the authors of the songs they sing. This is the only way to explain her enduring place at the top among the best, this is the only way to explain the reputation she enjoys even among those who are not otherwise passionate fans of pop music. Her hoarse, shadowed, and if I may use synesthesia, round, warm voice, full of restrained sensuality, equally exciting in the hall as in an intimate space, is only an instrument in the service of interpretation, only a means that will achieve a goal that transcends. And if I say that it is the voice of a friend, I could hardly wish for anything more.”
The album Gabi was remastered by Goran Martinac at the Croatia Records Studio) while the lacquer cut of the album was done by Geoff Pesche at London’s Abbey Road Studios. A download card with a code to download the mp3 version of the album is also available with the release. In addition to the 180-gram color vinyl, the album also comes with an exclusive booklet containing texts by Siniša Škarica and Željko Luketić, an interview with Gabi Novak edited by Zlatko “Turki” Turkalj, and photos by Marko Čolić. Darko Kujundžić is responsible for the artistic design of the reissue.
