Croatia Records Release Information

The reissue of “Bez struje (Without Electricity) – Live in ZeKaeM” by Parni Valjak is available on double vinyl!

In the year they celebrate their 50th anniversary, Parni Valjak, one of the longest-running and most important bands in the Croatian part of the Yugoslavian region, is celebrating another anniversary.

Croatia Records presents the anniversary reissue of the legendary concert album “Bez struje – Live in ZeKaeM”, recorded 30 years ago at the Zagrebački Kazalište Mladih (Zagreb Youth Theatre), now released for the first time on vinyl.

Similar to the format of the acoustic MTV Unplugged albums that were played and recorded by the biggest stars of the international rock scene in the early 1990s (Eric Clapton, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, …), Parni Valjak presented an acoustic reading of their greatest hits in the intimate atmosphere of ZKM, with the fantastic support of the audience who sang together with singer Aleksandar “Aki” Rakimovski and the band from the first to the last song, which have remained in the band’s concert repertoire in that format to this day.

“Bez struje – Live in ZeKaeM” became one of the best-selling live releases in the Yugoslavian discography, and the success of the album was confirmed in 1996 by winning as many as five Porin awards, including the one for the album of the year.

Along with a selection of 16 classics that were previously available on various formats (CD, MC, VHS, DVD), this year’s vinyl reissue also brings a previously unreleased performance of “Stranica dnevnika” (A Page of the Diary).

In the booklet accompanying this reissue, the band leader Husein “Hus” Hasanefendić recalled the making of the album in a conversation with Zoran Tučkar: “Immediately after the release of “Buđenje” (Awakening), we did a tour with big concerts, we played wherever we could, and so as not to repeat the same places, I suggested acoustics. Within a week, we had the backbone of the program, we performed first in Split, then in Pazin, the concerts were announced as acoustic, and it turned into parties. The idea came up to record it, to have a document of the band’s stage. Well, when you start thinking about recording, your appetites start to grow. We introduced additional percussion, then backing vocals, then strings, and Alan Bjelinski wrote the arrangements. There were no synths and no electric guitars. We practiced in sections. For the first time, we all played together at a sound check on the day of the first concert. There was a lot of spontaneity and that’s how it was recorded.”

The album was remastered by Goran Martinac in the Croatia Records Studio, while the lacquer cut was done by Sean Magee in London’s Abbey Road Studios. The edition on double 180-gram vinyl comes with a booklet containing a review by Zoran Tučkar and photos by Livio Andrijić. The original artwork by Bino Uršić was adapted for the vinyl format by Darko Kujundžić. A download card with a code to download the mp3 version of the album is also included.
