Željko Bebek celebrates his 80th birthday with a special edition from Abbey Road
To mark his 80th birthday, Željko Bebek is presenting new studio recordings of his timeless songs. The song “Sto sam dana pio” (I’ve Been Drinking for a Hundred Days) was released today, while a new version of “Oprosti mi što te volim” (Forgive Me for Loving You) will premiere at 7 p.m. this evening.
Both songs are part of a major studio project, for which Bebek, together with his backing band, recorded a total of 22 songs in new arrangements at the legendary Abbey Road Studio in London.
This project holds special significance for Bebek, as it brings more than five decades of his career full circle. As he himself points out, he wanted this important stage in his life and artistic career to be marked in a special and lasting way.
“I have been thinking about an album of my most famous songs for a whole year. Croatia Records has been working on many major London-related projects in recent years, including the remastering of the album “Bitanga i princeza” (The Thug and the Princess). That story intrigued me, and when the opportunity for Abbey Road arose, I didn’t hesitate for a second,” Bebek recounted, adding: “Želimir Babogredac and the team at Croatia Records immediately embraced the idea, securing the studio, the equipment and a brilliant crew, especially Goran Martinac, who has already done “his PhD” in that area.”
Adding a special emotional dimension to the entire project is the fact that his son Zvonimir Bebek (guitar) also plays in the band, with whom Željko Bebek today shares the stage and the creative process. Alongside Zvonimir, the backing band consists of Davorin Silađi (guitar), Fran Šokić (piano/hammond), Karlo Kurtalj (bass guitar) and Filip Borovec (drums).
For his birthday, Bebek received a specially made Gretsch guitar from the record label Croatia Records, created at the Abbey Road Studio. The guitar was personally presented to him by Želimir Babogredac, the director of Croatia Records, and Bebek received the gift with great enthusiasm, emphasising how much it means to him to have an instrument made especially for him.
New versions of the songs “Sto sam dana pio” (I’ve Been Drinking for a Hundred Days) and “Oprosti mi što te volim” (Forgive Me for Loving You) are the first releases from this special edition, which will soon be released on CD, Blu-ray and vinyl.
Željko Bebek is thus celebrating his 80th birthday in true style: creating, recording and sharing music with his audience.
